English Arts Crafts Chair by Hugo Erskine Wemyss, circa 1905

About the Item

English Arts Crafts modified Windsor style chair of modernist or contemporary percept having double reversible (either 'sides' functional) 'horse-shoe' form and Circassian Walnut frame; the bent U-shape crest rails spindle joined to carve-shaped reversible plank seat, circa 1905. The chair is stamped on the back edge of the seat 'Rd 483013' which is a British Registry number that identifies this chair as being copyrighted 14 July, 1906 in the British Design Registry in London by Hugo Erskine Wemyss listed as "Hugo Erskine Wemyss trading as Aitchem, 22 Motcomb Street, London, SW, Dealer in Antiquities"; please see image 15 for image of original Registry entry. According to the University of Leeds, "Antique Dealers: the British Antique Trade in the 20th Century" Aitchem traded from 22 Motcomb Street (Belgravia), SW1, London, England, as a dealer in antiquities from 1910 to 1930, obviously an incorrect start date for the firm as evidenced by the chair's registry date and listing. Hugo Erskine Wemyss (Wemyss pronounced "Weems") was born 31 May, 1861 in London and died 12 March, 1933 at age 71 in Grasse, France and was never married. He was the son of James Hay Erskine Wemyss (1829 - 1864), Scottish Member of Parliament representing Fife from 1859 until his death, and Millicent Anne Mary Kennedy-Erskine (1831 - 1895) the daughter of the Hon. John Kennedy-Erskine, the youngest son of the 13th Earl of Cassilis, and his wife Lady Augusta FitzClarence, the fourth illegitimate daughter of King William IV. No other design patents, copyrights, or registry numbers are known to exist by Wemyss making this chair a possibly singular example. Provenance available upon request.
