About the Item
Ebenezer Tracy (who signed his chairs E B: TRACY) is considered to be one of the most prolific chairmakers of the eighteenth century. His chairs are known for their bulbous turnings, fine proportions, and well defined seats. He was the shop master who trained Amos Denison Allen(also a very sought after maker) as well as his sons, Ebenezer Jr. and Elisha Tracy. Elisha Tracy signed his chairs "E. Tracy" and his chairs are less desireable due to their weaker leg turnings. As quoted by Nancy Goyne Evans " There is a flamboyant character to the full-bodied leg balusters in chairs made by the elder Tracy and young Allen (Amos Denison Allen)that is wanting in those produced by Elijah Tracy." -American Windsor Chairs P.292. Ebenezer Tracy was also a Captain in the Fourth Company of Militia of the Twentieth Regiment in the Revolution though there is no indication that he saw active duty.
