About the Item

This account consists of five companies, I specialize in Japanese antiques and select carefully selected items. With 20 years of experience, we offer Japanese antiques from our unique perspective. This is a very old huge medicine tansu made in Japan. This furniture is from the Edo period (1800s-1860s). It is mainly made of cedar wood, and only the front of the drawers are made of paulownia wood. The handles are made of iron. The drawers were used to store organic plants, flowers, and materials used to make medicines. Each drawer is marked with a letter so that the contents can be identified. The 129 drawers in a row are an impressive sight. The furniture is notable for its excellent condition. Normally, a medicine tansu will always have missing handles and parts due to age and repeated use. Also, due to poor storage conditions, many of them have severe insect infestation. However, in the case of this medicine Tansu, all of the handle parts are still intact and there is absolutely no insect damage. The condition is truly miraculous. In order not to spoil the period atmosphere, only the inside of the drawers have been rinsed with water. In addition, all 129 drawers have been maintained to move smoothly. You can use it with peace of mind. This item evokes the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. It is a modest and humble beauty, the beauty of the unconventional, the opposite of vulgarity. This is a unique and very rare item. Weight　 Upper section: 12 kg (per piece) Lower section: approx. 50 kg.
