About the Item
A very early Oak Spice Chest with fine English form, handsome decorative panel doors and 24 drawers, four of which are hidden behind a central interior door. The Spice Chest features exceptional original interior strap hinges as well as bold Oval side carry handles. The interior drawers are dove-tail construction and have panel fronts with dark contrasting stained turned pulls. The Cabinet rests on four flattened Bun Feet. Lacking a key.
There is accompanying paperwork which is a 1968 copy of a receipt from a British Antiques Dealer Roy Barton of Codmore Hill, Sussex stating:
“ Rare Oak Spice Cabinet (c.1700) Fitted Five Secret Drawers”
“When first made this cabinet was almost certainly used by ANNIE LAURIE at her home, Maxwelton, and was purchased from Major General Sir John. E. Laurie, Bt., CBE., D.S.O., D.L., at Maxwelton, Moniave, Mt.. Dumfries, Scotland.” Signed, “R. Barton March 1968”
There are also copies of the title page of a catalogue of the Antique furniture and Effects of the Maxwelton Estate hat was held in October of 1967 and an accompanying photo of the Estate.
The Spice Cabinet measures 38” wide by 34” high by 17” deep.
Condition: Please study the detail photos. The overall condition is good for the great age with various time borne signs of age including a few stable age cracks, wear , rings and finish loss to the top surface and some missing panel trim to a drawer. Lacking a key. There are some jagged losses to the back boards. The aforementioned is for accuracy as the Spice Cabinet presents in an authentic and spectacular manner.
