About the Item

This charming travel trunk was crafted in France circa 1895 from richly toned poplar and features robust brass and iron reinforcements. Stamped Ed. L Paris on the central lockplate, the piece is fitted with hardware supplied by a Parisian locksmith or trunk outfitter, part of a tradition where specialized artisans contributed high-quality fittings to the luggage workshops of the Belle Époque. The trunk is bound in blackened iron straps with brass corners and studded detailing that offer both strength and visual contrast. Two brass side latches secure the case, while original leather handles on either end provide sturdy grip and authentic character. The interior is cleanly lined in black textile, making it suitable for modern storage or display. Measuring 28 inches wide by 14 inches deep and 11 inches high, this antique trunk is perfectly scaled for use as a tabletop accent, stackable storage, or decorative accessory at the foot of a bed. A handsome and functional piece of 19th-century French travel history, blending artisanal materials with timeless Parisian style.

18th Century Spanish Leather and Brass Nailhead Domed Trunk with Original Key
Located in Dallas, TX
This handsome Spanish trunk was crafted circa 1780 and features a domed wooden frame clad in hand-stitched leather, richly decorated with large and small brass nailheads in a rhythmic, geometric pattern. The ornamentation reflects the cuero claveteado tradition, an iconic technique of Spanish and Spanish Colonial craftsmanship. The hinged lid opens to reveal a divided wood interior, originally intended for storing valuables or personal effects. Original iron hardware, including strap hinges, lockplate, and key, remains intact (lock not working however). The exterior displays a deep, timeworn patina with softened edges and natural surface wear that speaks to over two centuries of use. French Parisienne Black wood and brass travel trunk - 19th Paris France
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Very fine late 19th century travel trunk in wood, brass, black coated canvas and interior fabric by A. Maille-Lavolaille. This superb trunk bears a plate monogrammed "C.F & Cie Paris" and a second plate numbered 2. The lock is inscribed "A. MAILLE-LAVOLAILLE" and "3 Rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs" are the name and Paris address of the manufacturer. The signature on the lock is quite rare, making this model particularly interesting. A goddess or gorgon is engraved on the top of the lock. A label remains inside the trunk. This extremely decorative, yet useful and historic trunk has very nice dimensions. The trunk shows signs of wear due to its age and many travels, making it a wonderful witness to history. Late 19th century - France The Lavolaille firm, successor to Katz et Cie, was founded in 1845, specializing in trunks for sales representatives. Made of wood, with strong handles and straps, and with interior layouts that varied according to the object, they were the ancestors of the "marmotte". Lavolaille would later join forces with A. Maille, another trunk manufacturer specialized in commercial travelers. Most trunks are covered with black canvas, steel or brass edging and decorative upholstery nails on the top or front of the trunk. Some trunks had nails signed "Lavolaille", like Louis Vuitton nails.
