About the Item

This handsome antique French travel trunk was crafted in France in the late 19th century, circa 1890, and exemplifies the sturdy yet refined construction associated with traditional French trunk-making. The compact square form was designed for durability while maintaining an elegant, architectural presence suitable for both travel and interior storage. The trunk is constructed of solid poplar wood panels, prized for their strength and lightness, and finished in a warm honey-brown patina developed naturally over time. Raised poplar battens reinforce the structure and are secured with rows of decorative brass studs. The exterior is fitted with substantial brass corner guards, hinges, and latches, along with original leather handles, all retaining a richly aged surface that enhances the piece’s authentic antique character. The interior opens to reveal a patterned paper lining in soft blue and cream tones, decorated with scrolling foliate motifs. The lining shows gentle wear consistent with age and use, contributing to the trunk’s genuine antique appeal. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age, with minor surface marks and patination that add historical depth rather than detract from its presentation. Versatile and timeless, this antique trunk may be used as a blanket chest, end-of-bed storage, coffee table, or accent piece in a living room, bedroom, or entryway, bringing classic French character and warmth to any interior. French Parisienne Black wood and brass travel trunk - 19th Paris France
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Very fine late 19th century travel trunk in wood, brass, black coated canvas and interior fabric by A. Maille-Lavolaille. This superb trunk bears a plate monogrammed "C.F & Cie Paris" and a second plate numbered 2. The lock is inscribed "A. MAILLE-LAVOLAILLE" and "3 Rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs" are the name and Paris address of the manufacturer. The signature on the lock is quite rare, making this model particularly interesting. A goddess or gorgon is engraved on the top of the lock. A label remains inside the trunk. This extremely decorative, yet useful and historic trunk has very nice dimensions. The trunk shows signs of wear due to its age and many travels, making it a wonderful witness to history. Late 19th century - France The Lavolaille firm, successor to Katz et Cie, was founded in 1845, specializing in trunks for sales representatives. Made of wood, with strong handles and straps, and with interior layouts that varied according to the object, they were the ancestors of the "marmotte". Lavolaille would later join forces with A. Maille, another trunk manufacturer specialized in commercial travelers. Most trunks are covered with black canvas, steel or brass edging and decorative upholstery nails on the top or front of the trunk. Some trunks had nails signed "Lavolaille", like Louis Vuitton nails.
