About the Item

Created in the 19th century, this hand-painted piece is the product of one of the richest artistic traditions in Mexico: the technique of lacquer known as “Maque”. A typical example of its time, the chest has a black background and is decorated on its sides and on its cover with an idyllic landscape in the countryside; beautiful floral and vegetal elements, as well as frets and spirals, complete the colorful decoration. The back is not decorated. The interior is lacquered in a bright red color; at the center of the lid, the national symbol of the eagle devouring a snake is displayed. Over the centuries, Mexican artisans have developed an infinity of techniques as well as a unique style, a mixture of the pre-Hispanic tradition and the European and Eastern influence. Although the native technique has a different origin from the Asian one, the intense exchange of goods during the viceroyal period led to a peculiar combination of styles and forms.
