About the Item

This richly carved wooden chest is a fine example of an Italian cassone from the 17th century. The cassone, also known as a bridal chest, was an essential piece of furniture in the homes of the affluent bourgeoisie and nobility. It was traditionally given as a wedding gift, filled with linens, clothing, or other valuable belongings, and also served as a symbol of wealth, status, and family pride. This chest is crafted from solid walnut, a wood highly prized in Italy for its warm color and fine grain. It is adorned on all sides with beautifully carved floral motifs and acanthus leaves, characteristic of the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. The front features a profiled panel framed by intricate carving, while the sides are fitted with wrought iron carrying handles, once used to move the heavy chest. The angled feet and architectural layout suggest a Northern Italian origin, possibly from Tuscany or Lombardy. Inside, a small compartment was built into the side, intended to store small valuables or documents—a subtle feature that reveals the meticulous craftsmanship with which this piece was made. Based on the stylistic elements, type of wood, and construction, the chest can be dated between 1620 and 1650. The piece is in exceptionally good original condition, with its hinges, lock, and key all fully authentic. In our workshop, the chest was gently cleaned and treated with a fresh protective layer of wax. This magnificent chest is solid, clean, and ready for use.
