About the Item

A good antique 18th century Dutch Colonial Governor's teak brass mounted ebonized chest, Dutch East Indies Company VOC, circa 1740. The VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) was formed during the first few years of the 1600s and was a powerful global trading company with a significant colonial presence in the East Indies until the late 1700s. Such chests were originally brought from Europe as time went on were made colonially from local hardwoods, they were owned by high ranking indididuals such as colonial governors. This chest is made from solid teak is fitted with reticulated brass mounts circular brass bosses is decorated with ebonized trim to the lid base. The lid is supported by a pair of reticulated strap hinges, the front of the chest has an ornate pierced-work brass lockplate and a functioning key is present. The sides of the chest have similar brass mounts and substantial cast bronze carrying handles, the chest is raised on compressed turned bun feet. The interior of the chest is clean free from aroma is ready to store clothes, bedding or whatever you choose. Condition is very good, the chest is robust and stable and can even be used as a bench or seat, this handsome 18th century chest is ready to grace your space.
