About the Item

This beautiful trunk or blanket chest was made in the mountain area of Austria in the early 19th century, circa 1820. It was completely made in solid pine by the use of traditional woodworking techniques. The sides were joined by classic dovetail joints and the mold was attached with hide glue and fixed with wooden pens. The piece rests on a detachable elevated plinth with bracket feet. The trunk has a turquoise base color and it was decorated with painted panels throughout. The panels have a deep red base color with a bone and brown painted surround. The paint on the lid has faded over many years. The trunk has the original forged steel hinges, working lock, and key fitted. On the interior there is a small compartment with a lid, that can be used to keep the main lid in an upright position to store material in the trunk. The whole piece was gently cleaned in our workshop and a new protective wax coat was added. The highly authentic chest is clean, solid, and ready for use.
