About the Item

This rural trunk was made in the countryside of eastern Germany in the late 18th century. The trunk or chest was completely made in solid European summer oak. All four sides and lid were made from a single board of oak timber. The front of the piece features two inlaid panels decorated with birds on a branch. Both sides and the lid have inlaid panels with beautiful compass roses in the lid. The inlaid wood is also known as marquetry and in this piece fruitwood and pine were used. The trunk is fitted with authentic forged steel hinges, lock, keyplate, and key. The piece has warm brown color with deep gloss and a great patina built up over many years. The chest is in good authentic condition and was gently cleaned in our atelier. The piece is clean, solid, and ready for use.
