A particularly handsome, early and original Yorkshire joined oak coffer of lovely colour and superb patina. With bold and well executed original carving throughout and retaining very good height to the stile feet. Huge slabs of oak have been shaped and chamfered and there are visible tooling marks to the inner faces of the fielded panels. The oak has been riven not sawn and consequently the coffer has survived in excellent original condition with splits or cracks, no later timbers, no repairs or damage and it retains its original substantial iron hinges. All pegs are original. Made by hand by a craftsman joiner in the early 17th Century and with many early and expensive details including a fully panelled back with shaped and channel carved stiles and muntins, the design repeated to the side panels also. The carved losenges to the panels of the lid and to the front panels, each with flying ribbons to the corners typical of Yorkshire work. Most early chests were carved to the visible faces only as carving was expensive and time consuming - chests with fielded and carved panels to the back are uncommon and demonstrate that no expense was spared in the making of this coffer - even the side that would not be seen is given special attention. The frieze and stiles carved with an unusually early strapwork and cable design of primative form and Elizabethan in style. Condition: virtually untouched, original condition. Two small wooden beads have been added to the inner faces of the back legs to provide additional support to the bottom boards above, these are not necessary and can be removed if desired without any harm to the coffer. Lock is later, large working iron key. No later timbers, no damage or breaks, no worm or other concerns. Knocks, dings and minor losses consistent with age and use. The best early and unspoilt coffer I have seen in a very long time and with some limited provenance from an Irish estate. Dimensions are: 42 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 32.5 inches high.
