About the Item

A fabulous black gilt Japanned Chinoiserie chest on stand. English. Circa 1920. A very decorative accent piece, the work on the chest depicting noble figures in traditional Chinese dress, alongside trees, foliage and a pagoda to the front. The sides having a crane in flight to one side, and two cranes beside the water with foliage to the other. All with geometric and floral boarders. The underside of the lid having a floral gilt design. The chest sits on the original ornate gilded stand with cabriole legs terminating on claw and ball hairy feet. With a carved central motif below a Japanned frieze. With the original patina, there is rubbing and differences to the finish in places. The whole with light knocks and marks giving this great character. Very sturdy with no loose joints, free from any woodworm. The are some corner blocks missing to the stand, but this does not affect its stability. The interior is 73cm wide x 43cm deep x 45cm high. Delivery included to mainland England, Wales and southern Scotland.

The chest has handmade dovetail construction, with a shaped apron below the two drawers, standing on squat cabriole legs and a pad foot. Made in two sections. The chest interior is 87cm wide x 45cm deep x 30cm high. Condition report - With the original patina and brass wear. There are some knocks and marks expected with a piece of this age. The beading on the drawers has some damage. The top has some polish loss in one place, you should be able to make this out in the photographs.
