About the Item

A Fine Late 19th / Early 20th Century German-Brazilian Chest in Peroba do Campo — Pomerode, Santa Catarina Crafted in the quiet valleys of Santa Catarina, in the German immigrant town of Pomerode, this refined chest embodies the discreet elegance and artisanal rigor that defined domestic furniture in Southern Brazil at the turn of the 20th century. Made in peroba do campo, a noble hardwood admired for its warmth, density, and exquisite grain, the piece survives as a poetic testimony to the cultural fusion between Brazilian materials and German craftsmanship. Its gently domed lid, perfectly joined dovetail corners, and the charming scalloped skirt speak to the disciplined aesthetic brought by Pomeranian and Saxon settlers—an aesthetic that favored precision, longevity, and a quiet yet confident beauty. The front bears the original monogram “R P”, inlaid with admirable simplicity, preserving the identity of its first owner and adding a touch of intimate historical charm. Measuring 79.5 cm wide × 41.3 cm deep × 56 cm high, it is a versatile piece, ideal as an accent chest, a hallway statement, or an elegant companion at the foot of a bed. The interior remains clean and spacious, with the traditional side compartment typical of the region. The chest is offered without key, in beautifully preserved condition, retaining its original character and natural patina. This is more than a utilitarian object: it is a surviving fragment of early immigrant life in Southern Brazil, where discipline, beauty, and craftsmanship merged into objects meant to endure generations. A rare opportunity to acquire a historically anchored piece of Brazilian-German heritage.
