About the Item

A handsome and well-proportioned domed top chest with rich patina, constructed of heavy hardwood clad in hand-forged iron strapwork forming a grid pattern across all sides and top. The chest is fitted with massive double hasp locks, side carrying handles, and a candle or document till inside. The slightly domed lid and recessed base give the piece a solid yet refined presence. The chest’s robust construction and decorative ironwork suggest origin in northern or western India—possibly Rajasthan or Gujarat—where such trunks were crafted for merchants and colonial households during the late 19th to early 20th century. Comparable examples were also produced in Goa and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) under British influence, often for export to Europe and the American East Coast. In the manner of pieces retailed by the Army Navy Co-operative Society, circa 1880–1910 The oxidized green and brown surface, developed from age and use, lends a desirable verdigris patina that enhances its sculptural quality. The interior shows evidence of original hand-tooled detailing, and the working chain support is likely an early 20th-century addition. From a private Main Line Philadelphia estate. Dimensions: 29"W × 18.5"D × 22"H (front) × 21.25"H (back) Condition: Good antique condition with expected wear, age cracks, and oxidation consistent with use and age; small loss to wood at bottom left front corner, and excellent surface character. Attribution: In the manner of late 19th-century Rajasthani or Goan iron-bound merchant chests.
