About the Item
This large and handsome painted dovetailed trunk commemorates either the birth or marriage of Agatha Taster in 1831. The ground is in shades of sang de boeuf paint. On the top this is fashioned into two faux panels, darker to delineate the frames and diluted into a wash to indicate the panels themselves. Trimmed in a dark green, the top lifts on massive iron strap hinges to reveal a spacious storage well with a wide and deep lidded candle box on the upper left. On the front, beneath the name and date, red and green astragal moldings enclose a buttermilk background to an oxblood panel bearing assorted colored blooms and seed pods. The spaces between and beneath the panels are filled with decorative linear motifs. The working lock is accompanied by an iron diamond- shaped escutcheon plate. The iron diamond theme is repeated on each side, as a backplate to the heavy duty carrying handles.
