About the Item

France / 16th century / bridal or blanket chest / oak / Gothic This impressive chest was hand-carved in solid oak in the 16th century in France. The construction is typical of very early European furniture. The front panel has rich hand carved Gothic geometric patterns. The chest closes with a lid and its original forged hinges, the key is not available. Chests of this type belong to the earliest surviving examples of European furniture and are very rare today. Made entirely from solid oak, the chest features a warm, dark brown tone with a beautifully aged patina. These chests were typically commissioned by wealthy bourgeois households, affluent merchants, or members of the nobility. They were used to store valuable linens, garments, documents, and other important possessions, both for daily use and for safekeeping during travel or household moves. This rare large chest tells a story of craftsmanship and tradition. Its spacious interior provides ample storage for blankets, toys, or treasured keepsakes, while the secure lid ensures your belongings are safely tucked away. Whether used as a decorative accent in your living room or as a stylish storage solution this chest is unique statement of style.

Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction. The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. This rare trunk would be perfect at the foot of a king size bed, an accent piece under a tall tapestry...
