About the Item
A fairly large painted bridal chest from southern Germany. The chest has a very rustic appearance and displays plenty of character. It is primarily painted in a soft green and decorated with panels bearing the name and wedding date of the previous owner (1853). The paint is quite worn, giving it a highly decorative appearance. The chest is in neat, but used condition. There are occasional traces of old woodworm, which have of course been checked and treated. It was once customary to give bridal furniture like this to the couple at a wedding. These pieces were later placed in a stateroom on the farm, rarely used for distinguished guests or special occasions. A beautiful and decorative piece of history.
