About the Item

Small solid walnut bench case, reinforced and decorated with striking wrought-iron hardware consisting of long lance-shaped plates and forged studs, many of them pierced with crosses or engraved with religious motifs. These details suggest an original clerical or monastic purpose, perhaps as sacristy furniture or ecclesiastical trousseau chest. Dating: late sixteenth century-early seventeenth century Materials: solid walnut and wrought iron Measures: width 92 cm height 58 cm maximum depth at the legs 48 cm Conservation status and interventions: The central structure of the cabinet is authentic, with antique patina and lived-in surface. Some parts have been replaced over time: a bottom board and, most likely, also the lid, which was renewed in the 19th century; the lid hinges are more recent (modern). The legs show ancient reworkings, probably still 19th-century, but consistent in material and character with the whole. Presence of slight iron cracking and oxidation consistent with age. Overall good and stable condition. Observations: A specimen of remarkable charm and archaic character, representative of rustic Renaissance production in northern Italy. Nineteenth-century modifications, of restorative use, do not alter its authenticity or documentary value. Provenance: private collection, Veneto.
