About the Item

(a+b) are PhDs, architects, designers, experts in architecture and design for space and extreme environments. They design by crossing research and technological innovation with poetry. In 2017, they founded Space4InspirAction, a space architecture and design course supported by the European Space Agency (ESA), with which they collaborate on an ongoing basis with leading international space agencies and industries, as well as major design companies. Their work explores very different fields, searching for a bridge among science, technology and beauty: transportation design for big industry, fashion tech, object and furniture collections for companies, limited editions for art and design galleries. System consisting of uprights and shelves in extruded aluminium in two different depths (210 and 360 mm) and various heights and lengths. A geometric plot clearly emerges at the intersection between the vertical and horizontal lines, which share the same visual status and importance, unfolding amidst solid structures and empty spaces in a pattern of modules, surfaces and vanishing points made possible by large openings, all exalted by a certain delicacy of touch. A system generated by numbers has simplicity and flexibility as the primary traits of its own DNA and elegantly refuses to flaunt the nobility associated with being made of aluminium. The extraordinary capabilities opened up by the section’s elegant technology and the intelligence hidden away in the joints mean that even the quietest and most discreet embodiment of this Segno is, nevertheless, quite astonishing.

Modular bookshelves in a steel sheet with epoxy finish in semi-glossy RAL 9010. A central upright structure supports five shelves of decreasing depths.
