Introducing an ultra functional single-bay wall unit designed by the influential Jack Cartwright for Founders. Featuring two cabinets and a mixed-use writing surface/large storage drawer this versatile wall unit can be arranged in a limitless amount of configurations. It's small stature makes it perfect for those who are limited on space but unwilling to compromise on functionality and style. Jack Cartwright was prolific American designer of the Mid-Century period and produced a large body of work, many pieces of which are still in production to this day. After serving in the military Cartwright returned to his home state of Michigan in 1950 where he attended the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. He excelled in furniture and product design and graduated Designer of the Year in 1953.In August of 1953, Jack married fellow student and Interior Design Major, Mary Lee Finnigan and they moved to High Point NC where he began his long career in furniture as a designer for Heritage Furniture Company. In 1956, he joined Founders Furniture as head designer and vice-president of the company. Over the years he received numerous awards for his furniture designs, residential and contract, and those designs gained him special recognition in the U.S. and abroad. Founders Furniture Company was a short-lived 20th-century American brand that produced enduring Mid-Century Modern designs. The company's streamlined dressers, lounge chairs and coffee tables feature solid wood construction and simple but elegant designs. The history of Founders Furniture Company began in 1946 when it was established as a subsidiary of Knoll Inc. During its years of operation, Founders hired celebrated American modernist designers like Milo Baughman and David Parmelee, who created sleek commodes and sideboards in mahogany and rosewood for the brand. Michigan native Jack Cartwright, a designer at Heritage during the 1950s, also worked at Founders as head designer before moving on to start his eponymous furniture company in 1963. Founders continued operations until 1965 when Thomasville Furniture acquired it. Established in 1904 in North Carolina — home to other iconic mid-century brands such as Drexel and Broyhill — Thomasville expanded significantly during the 1960s and purchased several other American furniture manufacturers. Today, the timeless styles and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Founders Furniture Company pieces continue to render them desirable for today’s interiors. The walnut composition is in overall very good shape but does show vintage wear such as a small gouge, multiple surface scratches and the above mentioned veneer repair (all of which can be seen clearly in the detail photos provided). The cane on all four doors is in remarkably good shape given it's age showing no tears, brakes or discoloration whatsoever. The stainless steel uprights do show multiple surface scratches, the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided. All doors and single drawer open and close with ease and each of the three cabinets are adjustable to any custom arrangement you desire. This versatile wall unit it is ultra-functional, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos and video for details on this wall unit's current condition.
