About the Item

Monumental Victorian Parcel-Ebonized Mahogany Bookcase Cabinet, Possibly by Gillows of Lancaster, England, circa 1890 A magnificent and architecturally proportioned late Victorian mahogany bookcase cabinet, English, circa 1890, attributed to a top-tier cabinetmaker—likely Gillows of Lancaster and London. Crafted in richly figured mahogany with parcel-ebonized molding and drawer fronts, the piece is designed in three joined sections, each with a glazed double-door cabinet fronting a three-tier adjustable shelving interior, all lined in light pine. Above, six frieze drawers with brass escutcheons provide discrete yet functional storage, a design hallmark often seen in high-end library furniture of the period. The structure rests on a paneled plinth base, and retains its original shipping label to the verso. The refined neoclassical restraint, exceptional joinery, and use of high-grade materials are consistent with the work of Gillows, one of the most celebrated English furniture firms of the 18th and 19th centuries. The presence of hand-dovetailed drawers, tongue-and-groove paneled pine backing, and a modular design for ease of transport further support this attribution. Dimensions: Height: 41.5 in. (105.5 cm) Width: 145.5 in. (369.6 cm) Depth: 15 in. (38.1 cm) Condition: Good condition overall, with expected signs of age and use. Surface wear and scratches throughout, including ring stains to the top. Minor edge wear, wear to base. All drawers and doors operate smoothly. Retains key. Large and Extensively Carved Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival Cabinet
Located in Morristown, NJ
Late 19th C., French Gothic Revival cabinet, with interior shelf and central door. Heavily adorned with carved panels to front and sides. The front is comprised of panels flanking a central door. To each side of the door are two beautifully carved panels. The door has brass hinges and escutcheon. It locks with the key retained. The carving is mirrored on both sides of the piece, each comprising five carved panels. The red undertones suggest that this is a chestnut rather than an oak piece. The overall structure owes much to the Gothic Revival movement of 19th century France, with a nod to Renaissance Revival. The door panel is dominated by a lovely example of Gothic tracery in the form of a half moon “window...
