A Magnificent Scale George II Carved Oak Bookcase With central glazed doors, showing original glass with soft movement in the plates, with a configuration of shelves. The intricately carved stepped cornice, with dentil moulding above egg and dart carved panelled doors, flanked by confidently carved Corinthian columns. The unusual central mask detail is complimented by subtle laurel leaf carved detailing, with the bottom plinth section enclosing three large and voluminous drawers. With an overall soft yet dark patina to this early oak timber. Provenance: Previously part of the furnishings at Leeds Castle, Kent, as illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture in the British Tradition, Antiques Collectors’ Club, 1979, pp. 384. fig. 3:447 Additional information: Dimensions: Height: 244cm, 8 foot Width: 365cm, 11 foot 11 3/4″ Depth: 62.5cm, 24 1/2″

Each crossbanded in rosewood, with four graduating shelves, with turned tapering reeded supports, brass caps and casters. The pair of bookcases have recessed reeded columns in the Pompeian manner and are framed by ‘ribboned’ rosewood. In 1801, Gillows of London and Lancaster supplied a closely related pair of bookcases to Luke Dillon, 2nd Lord Clonbrock to furnish his new library at his ancestral home, Clonbrock in Co. Galway. They were sold by Mr. and Mrs Luke Dillon-Mahon, Clonbrock, Christie’s house sale, 1st November 1976, Lot 12.
