About the Item

Jatoba, Brazilian Cherry wood, Albero mid century modern book mill designed by Gian franco Frattini, pre Poltrona Frau. This unique Brazilian Cherry wood version has been made in the 80's in a limited edition before Poltrona Frau took it into production. As far as we know, there is not another Jatoba version is for sale anywhere. Conceived in the late 1950s as a floor-to-ceiling free-standing bookcase, the Albero was designed for use in interior settings rather than for serial production. The Albero is formally associated with the Neo liberty period and, in terms of product type, to the floor-to-ceiling bookcase systems that were popular throughout the 50s and 60s. Designed by Frattini, the structure stands out both for its complex cabinet work and for its sculpted nature, acting as the centre piece of a room. The bookcase comprises just a few ingeniously interconnected elements, which show Gian franco Frattini’s attention to the laws of statics and dynamics. It has four vertical struts and two rack and pinion poles at the two ends, all crafted from solid Jatoba. The shelves, produced in MDF with Jatoba essence veneer, can be positioned in the holes along the struts as desired with a minimum of eight and a maximum of 12 shelves. A special metal cylinder is attached to the ceiling to hold the bookcase in place. The Albero’s frame is attached to this and the floor thanks to two adjustable metal ferrules that ensure its stability. The height of the bookcase can vary between 2.66 m to 3.26 m. / 104.72 to 128.35 inches. Gian Franco Frattini was an Italian architect and designer who was born on May 15, 1926, in Padua, Italy, and died on April 6, 2004, in Milan, Italy. He is best known for his work as a furniture designer, creating iconic pieces for well-known brands such as Cassina, Bernini, and Artemide. He was also a professor of interior design at the Politecnico di Milano, where he taught for over twenty years. Frattini's designs were often characterized by their simple, clean lines and functional elegance. He was particularly skilled at working with different materials, including wood, metal, and glass, and his designs often combined these materials in unique and innovative ways. Some of his most famous designs include the "P64" chair, which he designed for Cassina in 1964, and the "T12" table, which he designed for Bernini in 1956. His work continues to be highly regarded in the design world today, and many of his pieces are considered to be classics of modern design. Albero will be shipped abroad disassembled in two custom made wooden crates. Cost of insured transport to the US crates included is Euro 1.675 when we handle the transportation which we highly recommend.
