About the Item

A true exemplar of 1970s Italian Mid-Century Modern design, this modular bookcase system was created by Jan De Vries for Maisa di Seveso. Its playful yet refined composition consists of multiple modules in solid and veneered wood, each with distinct proportions and functions: Three base units (60 cm W × 40 cm D × 57 cm H) Two base units (81 cm W × 40 cm D × 57 cm H) One taller base unit (76 cm W × 50 cm D × 80 cm H) One low credenza/cassettiera (76 cm W × 40 cm D × 40 cm H) One small wall cabinet (60 cm W × 40 cm D × 40 cm H) One open wall shelf (57 cm H × 40 cm D × 30 cm W) One large wall cabinet (57 cm H × 40 cm D × 60 cm W) Altogether, the complete configuration measures 290 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 180 cm in height. Each module interlocks seamlessly, creating a cohesive yet dynamic wall-spanning installation. The warm wood tones—likely teak or walnut—shine through a light satin finish that accentuates the natural grain, while subtle recessed handles and flush doors preserve the system’s minimalist lines. Open shelves alternate with closed cabinets and drawers, allowing for flexible storage and display options. Designed for Maisa di Seveso, a respected Milanese manufacturer known for craftsmanship and innovation, this bookcase embodies the era’s spirit of modular living. It is in good vintage condition, with only a light surface patina consistent with age and light signs of use. Ideal for living rooms, libraries, or offices seeking a statement piece that balances functionality with unmistakable Mid-Century Modern flair.
