About the Item

Rotating “Centro” bookshelf by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, custom-made in the early 1970s for Luigi Sormani, the manufacturer of the well-known “Centro” bookshelf system. The “Centro” bookshelf became a design hit of the 1960s and 1970s and is now a recognised collector’s piece; this rotating bookshelf is a special commissioned version that comes directly from the family of the manufacturer. This tall rotating bookshelf is designed as a vertical tower with eight open storage compartments, making it a very functional solution for storing and displaying books and objects in a compact footprint. The rotating Centro bookshelf is organised in two different heights of compartments: - four compartments with approximate internal height 80 cm, width 46 cm, depth 28.5 cm (about 2.62 ft × 1.51 ft × 0.94 ft), each with one internal shelf, - four compartments with approximate internal height 61 cm (about 2 ft), same width and depth, three of them with an internal shelf and one left open to accommodate taller items such as art books or decorative objects. The total size of the rotating Centro bookshelf is approximately 215 cm high × 78 cm × 78 cm (about 7.05 ft high × 2.86 ft × 2.86 ft). The bookcase rotates on its base, allowing easy access to all sides and turning it into a freestanding room divider or a sculptural focal point in a library or living room. The structure is in black metal, underlining the architectural character of Salocchi’s design and the modular spirit of the Centro bookshelf system. This vintage Centro bookshelf has a strong provenance: it belonged to the manufacturer’s family and was produced expressly for Luigi Sormani. It is in very good condition overall, with only slight wobbling consistent with the height of the piece and normal use over time. Surfaces show minor signs of age as expected for an early 1970s bookshelf that has been carefully used and preserved. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by the owner on original vintage letterhead of the Sormani company, documenting the connection between this rotating Centro bookshelf, Claudio Salocchi and Luigi Sormani. For collectors of Italian design, this rotating Centro bookshelf represents an important chapter in the history of modular bookcases and offers a highly functional storage tower within the original Centro bookshelf language.

1967 Salocchi White Mirrored Vanity with Light and Tilting Top Sormani, Italy
By Claudio Salocchi, Sormani
Located in Arosio, IT
This is an original piece of 1967, that was meant to be put in the middle of a room, thus its name "centro". It is a white cube with a tilt-top that turns into a mirror with a built-in light on two sides. Size is cm 59 H x 81 x 81 (ft: H 1' 11" 15/64 x 2' 7" 57/64 x 2' 7" 57/64). Even the two light bulbs are still the original ones, perfectly functioning. A transformer must be applied for US plugging. All drawers (4 rotating on the back and two on the front) work perfectly. The finish is slightly damaged on the lower back drawers (shows some not very noticeable swelling) and one of the front drawers has a slightly different hue (due to light and time). All the hardware and the tilting hardware in chrome-stained brass are perfect. Amina was a disruptive series of extremely contemporary containers for the home, envisaged by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani in the mid-1960s. It was the first series of totally white, squared furniture for the living- dining- and bedroom of international level. Almost a scandal for an era still tied to traditional wooden finishes and shapes. From scandal to success, this chest of drawers or coiffeuse was displayed with the rest of the collection of beds, tables, modular shelving units, in several movies of the early Seventies such as "L'Invasion" of Yves Allergret, with Michel Piccoli and Lisa Gastoni. The piece comes with a certificate of provenance on original Sormani letterhead. Please check also LU3681116076542 to have a matching ensemble
