About the Item

John Widdicomb Hutch or as the Brit’s might call a “dresser” because you dressed your food on it was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan and sold through Baker, Knapp and Tubbs in their Los Angeles, California Showroom. The John Widdicomb solid white oak hutch lived a very sheltered life in Brentwood, California and did not require restoration upon its arrival here in Chicago. In fact, the hutch or dresser is so nice, that when you walk by the hutch it appears to be a new piece of furniture and in this business, that is a true rarity that I only wish happened more often. The hutch is ideal for displaying your finest plate and there are even hooks to hang your mugs. Little history of the John Widdicomb Company; founded in 1858 when George Widdicomb opened his cabinet shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In the beginning it was called George Widdicomb Sons with his four sons would serve in the Civil War. The eldest sons opened a shop in 1864 and formed the Widdicomb Furniture Company in 1873. By 1915, they sold to Griswold Sr. and Mr Von Platen. The company then merged with Mueller Furniture Corporation, becoming Widdicomb-Mueller Corporation. In 1970, the company name was acquired by John Widdicomb Company. George Nakashima worked for John Widdicomb, from the 1950s to early 1960s. Widdicomb went out of business in 2002 and the design and manufacturing rights for John Widdicomb Company were acquired by Gustav Stickley who continues to offer pieces under the John Widdicomb Collection.

Antique French Deux Corp Cupboard in Original Finish from Chateau Unrestored
Located in BENSENVILLE, IL
This extremely rare, Antique French Cupboard, is from the Château de Loyat in Brittany, which I believe dates back to the 1500, was in a condition, that Antique dealers can only dream of. The French Cupboard or Cabinet, is exactly what you would expect, a 300-year-old antique French Cabinet to look like, if no one ever touched the finish, let alone restore the Antique Cupboard. Our opinion is, that this Antique French Cupboard or Cabinet, could have been made in the late 1600s or early 1700s and if I did not know that this Cupboard was made from French White Oak, one would have thought it was constructed of iron, based on its weight. Our centuries old French Cupboard, was constructed without the use of any nails or glue, for the entire Antique Cabinet was assembled using wooden pegs. Our Old Plank restoration department, has just completed a 240-hour conservation procedure, wherein lieu of just replacing the old worn wood oak boards, we chose to harden them and only used small fillets of antique French Oak for repair. Yes, this became a labor of love, but for us, to find an antique French Cabinet, in this virgin untouched state, is quite rare nowadays, so, the choice was made to conserve, rather than restore, which required triple the labor. Our Antique French Deux Corps...
