About the Item
18th Century French Louis XVI Period Buffet in Stripped Oak is a timeless example of rural artisans emulating the styles set by the Royal Family during previous centuries. Around the time of the American Revolution, such craftsmen utilized indigenous old-growth woods like the French white oak used here, to create works of the cabinetmaker's art destined to last for centuries. The solid plank top overlooks a bordering of reverse molding that appears atop the trio of drawers. The middle drawer was customarily made less wide and fitted with a lock for sharp cutlery ~ important for growing families with youngsters always about. This example featured locks on all drawers and both cabinet doors in a bit of a departure, each lock fitted with a brass key guard. Corners are mitered to soften the impact on the traffic flow through the room. The carved detail, however, immediately captivates one's attention with stylized wildflowers and foliates in tasteful arrangements. The natural beauty and warmth of the wood has been brought out with our painstaking stripping process creating a soft, neutral palette and visual impact.

This is a beautiful, well-built and large period buffet that has style, and elegance. This gorgeous piece was built in the mid 1700s using all pegged construction and solid oak. The buffet features 3 drawers over three doors, all decorated with beautiful carving and raised panels throughout. The drawers show beautiful hand-made dovetailed joints and the back itself is a work of art. The buffet is still sitting on its original carved feet and shows a scalloped and carved apron, and is finished with simple, original hardware.
