About the Item

18th century French Louis XVI white washed Buffet ~ Cabinet provides an excellent example of the level of high quality that was attainable by the more humble, rural furniture crafters in France during the period. Utilizing dense, old-growth oak, they created a neoclassical casework with rectilinear form, then set about adorning it with motifs inspired by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Dentil molding appears around the top rim, underneath which the drawer tier appears, which has been carved with fluting. A lentil spacer between the drawers and cabinet has not escaped the sculptor's tools, with foliates in bas relief framed by beaded trim. The two elegant cabinet doors below continue the foliate theme set on beautiful frameworks, with a carved and molded center stile. Fluted reeded, mitered cornerposts feature rosettes above and below, and lead the eye to the scrolled feet below which wrap around even on the sides. The sides also feature raised panels for visual appeal, with the entire piece washed in white to create a soft visual texture and durable finish. Circa 1790s Measures 47.5 H x 55 W x 21.5 D.
