About the Item

Antique Renaissance Revival Buffet Cabinet with Hutch American Victorian, c. 1880–1900 This piece represents the Renaissance Revival style that flourished in the late Victorian era, with clear Jacobean and Flemish influence visible in its carved supports and strong proportions. Likely produced in Rockford, Illinois—a major center for fine furniture manufacturing at the time—it embodies the architectural presence and craftsmanship of high-quality American pieces of the period. Crafted from hardwood, likely walnut or oak, the cabinet is accented with burl wood veneer panels that provide a striking contrast. The upper hutch features a central glass-paneled door framed by ornate wooden grillwork, providing both storage and display; the lower section features a central cabinet door with three shelf levels for additional generous enclosed storage. A bottom drawer adds further utility. The open base continues the theme with urn-shaped baluster turnings—details rooted in Renaissance Revival design yet closely tied to Flemish and Jacobean tradition. While Renaissance Revival and Jacobean Revival often overlap, this piece is best described as Renaissance Revival with Jacobean/Flemish influence. Its deep carving, architectural form, and decorative veneers align with Renaissance Revival traditions, while the robust baluster supports recall Jacobean design. A striking example of late 19th-century American decorative art, this cabinet would originally have served as a dining room buffet or china cabinet. Today, it remains both a functional storage piece and a sculptural centerpiece.
