About the Item
Buffet, enfilade designed and signed by Maison Gouffé in Paris, from the Art Deco period in France. This piece is crafted in solid beech wood and finished with a gold leaf lacquer. There are two doors that open to interior shelving and four dovetailed drawers down the center. We love the Art Deco curves of this stylized piece.
"This buffet was designed by Maison Gouffé in Paris where Jean Royère was the leading designer. Maison Gouffé was a renowned Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Paris furniture manufacturer. It is in this iconic workshop that Jean Royere trained and eventually executed many of his designs. From there, his fame quickly grew, and he went on to found his own company in 1944, designing custom furniture for high-end clients.
Throughout his life, Royère traveled extensively, notably opening offices in Cairo, Beirut, Teheran, and Sao Paulo. Some of his most enthusiastic patrons included King Farouk, King Hussein of Jordan, and the Shah of Iran. His most memorable work was often considered whimsical or even eccentric, featuring unusual elements such as furry armchairs, bright pink interiors, and curly table legs."
