About the Item

Geometric Oak Cabinet in the Spirit of Gaston Poisson, France, 1930s–40s Architect’s rigor in cabinetmaker’s oak — a compact essay in French geometric modernism. This striking cabinet channels the measured elegance of Gaston Poisson, whose work distilled Art Deco into calm, architectural volumes. The façade is organised in two tiers: a pair of paneled doors above a wide lower drawer, all resting on four massive block feet that lift the piece just enough to read as a small, self-contained structure. Each door is worked with a bold stepped square motif, a sequence of receding frames that lead the eye to a central panel. The relief is strong yet disciplined, catching light and shadow without resorting to ornament for its own sake — very much in keeping with Poisson’s language of composed geometry. The side panels quietly echo this treatment, ensuring the cabinet is resolved from every angle. Below, the full-width drawer sits within its own framed recess, softening the vertical emphasis and offering practical storage. Subtle square pulls and simple ring handles maintain the cabinet’s rectilinear rhythm, allowing the warm, honey-toned oak and its visible grain to remain the main decorative element. The overall silhouette is compact and robust, ideal for use as a bar, linen cupboard, or entry piece where both presence and function are required. The cabinet presents in good vintage condition, with light wear and softly rounded edges that testify to its age while leaving the structure solid and dependable. Its honest construction and timeless geometry make it an easy fit in interiors ranging from strict modernist to rustic contemporary. Available for private acquisition.
