Large Antique French Carved Oak Buffet de Chasse, circa 1880

About the Item

This fine French carved Buffet de Chasse has been made from oak, in the late 1800s. It would have originally been commissioned for a country Manoir or Chateau, where hunting and wildlife was always an important part of life. The main structure of this piece would have been cut to form by a menuisier or carpenter, while the intricate carvings were executed by a specialist known as an ebeniste. The animal forms and carvings on this buffet are striking and unique to this type of furniture. Two seated hunting dogs serve as a type of canine caryatid for the upper, glass-enclosed display cabinet, which is surmounted by a pediment flanked by two small dog busts. The upper crown, rising high above, is centered by an important stag, mounted to a scrolling cartouche. The lower section of the piece is a gently curved and has 4 doors and 4 drawers, with the two front panels featuring large game birds among thick reeds, framed by a canted molding. The curved side doors are decorated with beautiful carvings depicting rich bounties of overflowing baskets of wheat, nuts, and fruit. The rest of the piece is built in the Louis XIII style, characterized by an overall architectural form, with columns and stepped out platforms. All of this rests on large bun feet. There are a total of 4 exterior corner display shelves, a glass enclosed upper storage, two lower corner storage areas, and a single shelf in the center section. There is also a thin wooden plate rest on the lower surface of the buffet. This large French cabinet boasts some truly exceptional carvings as seen by the depth and realism of motifs and animal sculptures. Note the carved wooden chain attached to the seated dogs, and the thick bushels of wheat and hunting cap. Today, this piece will make a grand statement in a hunting lodge, ranch, or any interior needing a richly carved and large scale presentation piece.
