About the Item

With its time-softened silhouette and storied patina, this French provincial buffet carries the imprint of centuries—an object whose presence conjures both vernacular memory and sculptural quietude. The façade, composed of two paneled doors, reveals a rhythmic composition of raised lozenges and ogee tracery, delicately carved and now faded into pale, silvery tones through generations of wear and elemental exposure. Attributed to a provincial workshop in the spirit of French Gothic Revival, the cabinet dates to the late 19th century and evokes the architecture of monastic furniture—reductive, rectilinear, and reverent of timber. Its doors rest on wooden pivot hinges and retain original iron escutcheons, while the newer base and feet—restored with subtle care—are shaped in soft volumes that lift the body lightly above the floor. The materials tell their own story: the door fronts, left in their original oxidized finish, contrast beautifully with the stripped and waxed oak structure, revealing both grain and joinery in their naked form. This tension between untouched and renewed surfaces lends the piece a meditative duality—between past and present, ruin and renewal. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. A poetic relic for contemporary interiors, this buffet offers not only storage but also a tactile encounter with time itself—architecture in miniature, pared to its elemental form. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.

French 19th Century Carved Oak Buffet a deux Corps
Located in Baton Rouge, LA
A handsome and sizable solid oak buffet a deux corps (in two sections) with Provincial charm from 19th century France. This four door case antique is split into two bodies: a deeper lower body and a more narrow but tall upper body. The upper cabinet is crowned with a molded cornice above imaginative carvings in the frieze depicting swags and hanging tassels, more in the Louis XVI taste. The upper doors are delightfully paneled and conceal a spacious interior with two removable shelves, approximately 13" deep. The lower paneled doors open to reveal a space with a single removable shelf, approximately 18" deep. Both sets of doors contain functioning locks and feature scrolling iron escutcheon plates. Two keys are included. All doors are supported by steel barrel...
