About the Item

Carved Oak and Marble Sideboard in the Spirit of Paul Follot, France, 1920s–30s Lush carving and architectural calm — a celebration of French Art Deco luxury at its most ornamental. This remarkable sideboard evokes the opulent world of Paul Follot, where nature and geometry intertwine in richly crafted surfaces. The long, slightly bowed façade is composed of deep, framed panels, each filled with exuberant hand-carved fruits and foliage. Grapes, leaves and stylised stems unfurl across the doors in rhythmic relief, turning the cabinet front into a continuous bas-relief frieze. Above, a dramatic figured marble top runs the full length of the piece, its swirling veining echoing the movement of the carving below. A central band of oak interrupts the stone like a bridge, visually anchoring the top to the wooden case and recalling the way Follot often staged contrasting materials in his ensembles. At the centre, a glazed vitrine door introduces a moment of lightness and transparency in the midst of the carved mass. Behind the glass, mirrored back and internal shelving create a jewel-box for glassware or treasured objects, while the flanking doors provide generous enclosed storage. The whole rests on a stepped plinth base, giving the sideboard a grounded, architectural stance without sacrificing elegance. The palette of pale, matte oak against the richly coloured marble softens the inherent luxury of the piece, allowing it to sit comfortably in both historic and contemporary interiors. Its craftsmanship — from the crisp carving to the carefully mitred frames — speaks to the high level of Parisian ateliers working in the Art Deco period, and to Follot’s influence in marrying ornament and order.
