About the Item

Painted Cupboard from Bad Tölz - 1841 Technical information: Period: 1841 Origin: Bad Tölz, Bavaria (Southern Germany) Wood type: Fir Height: 165 cm 64.96 in Width: 103 cm (111 cm with frame) 40.55 in (43.70 in with frame) Depth: 42 cm (46 cm with frame) 16.54 in (18.11 in with frame) Description: This is a two-door wardrobe, crafted in solid fir and dated 1841, as indicated by the inscriptions painted on the upper part of the front panels. The structure is typically Alpine, with a linear body and a molded cornice that extends laterally into a gentle chamfer, lending the piece a sense of solid elegance. The painted decoration is the true protagonist: on a blue and natural wood background unfold stylized polychrome floral motifs, alternating with devotional symbols such as radiant flaming hearts, accompanied by floral bouquets arranged in golden vases. The side panels, as well as the front frames, echo the same vivid chromatic range, dominated by carmine red, ultramarine blue, and touches of golden yellow. This pictorial language is characteristic of Bavarian tradition in the 19th century, where sacred and popular symbolism merged with decorative expressiveness intended to enrich the domestic environment and to safeguard not only clothing but also the family's cherished possessions. The patina, well preserved, attests to the authenticity of the period and to the evocative strength of Alpine culture. Restoration information: The photos show the chest either unrestored or only partially restored. At the time of sale, the restoration will be completed according to the client's preferences. Our workshop guarantees a conservative restoration approach, aimed at preserving the integrity and authenticity of each piece. Every item is treated to ensure solidity, durability, and hygiene. Once the work is finished, the chest will be ready for use, suitable for storing clothing, tableware, or food. Planned work includes: Structural restoration: replacement of small missing parts, closure of cracks on the back, consolidation of weakened areas, inspection and repair of the hardware. Thorough anti-woodworm treatment. Cleaning and sanitization of the interior. Exterior finish with natural beeswax. Interior finish with shellac, a natural alcohol-based varnish. Customization on request: Degree of restoration according to the client's wishes. Interior adjustments (addition of hanging rods, shelves, dividers, etc.).
