About the Item
Exceptional bridal cabinet in original paint from Franconia, southern Germany. This cabinet dates from the late 18th century, and the original paint has worn beautifully in a characteristic way. This example has a rather unique color combination of yellow, red, and green. The panel on the door depicts the tree of life growing from the chalice of the water of life, a key motif in folk art from that period. The cabinet shows some old repairs to the footer and the corners of the door. Sporadic traces of old woodworm can be seen, which have naturally been checked and treated. The piece of furniture has three interior shelves and a working lock with a key. It was customary in the past to give bridal furniture like this to the couple at a wedding. These pieces were later placed in a state room on the farm, rarely used for distinguished guests or special occasions. A beautiful and decorative piece of history.
