About the Item

This rare original Bauhaus sideboard originates from Czechoslovakia and dates to around 1934. The piece stems from a private Prague estate and was acquired as part of a coherent furniture ensemble, originally comprising a sideboard, a showcase cabinet, and two bookcases from the same interior. The architectural design is closely related to the cabinet and sideboard typologies developed within the Bauhaus context of the early 1930s and shows a clear stylistic proximity to furniture designs associated with Marcel Breuer, particularly in its strict geometry, material contrast, and functional clarity. The boldly shaped avant-garde handles stand out as a defining detail, underlining the modernist character of the piece while offering a refined tactile quality. The construction combines black lacquered block-board panels with chrome-plated steel and chrome-plated brass bands, resulting in a visually balanced interplay of solid volume and linear metal accents. A practical pull-out top positioned above the doors enhances the functional versatility of the sideboard and reflects the Bauhaus principle of utility integrated into form. The sideboard remains in original condition and has been professionally conserved. Only careful polishing was carried out under strict conservation guidelines, with full respect for the naturally aged patina. No invasive restoration measures were undertaken, preserving the authentic surface character and historical integrity. With its well-documented provenance, strong design language, and exceptional state of preservation, this sideboard represents an important example of pre-war Czechoslovak Bauhaus furniture and offers a museum-quality presence. Additional pieces from the same original room are available separately, including one showcase cabinet and two bookcases.
