About the Item

19th Century Dutch Raised Cabinet in the Chinoiserie Style is a splendid example of highly talented European craftsmen imitating popular styles during the craze for all things Oriental during the 1800s. This example was cleverly constructed from an abundant hardwood, sycamore, yet stained and finished to mimic the mahogany woods that were more commonly used in Asia at the time. The cabinet rests on a interesting platform consisting of four barley twist columns connected by an "X" shaped barley twist stretcher, all resting on bun feet. The cabinet is most arresting, with the straight, tailored lines embellished with intricately cast brass hardware including hinges, corner brackets, handles with guards on the sides, and an amazing lockwork with front plate. Even the exterior full width drawer features a brass key guard and a brace of bale pulls with intricate guards. Doors open wide thanks to the exterior-mounted hinges, revealing yet another full width drawer and a pair of half-width drawers inside, each fitted with brass pendant pulls mounted on rosette guards. the cabinet above features a single shelf, indicating the proud owner could store anything in here he wanted protected from guests or employees of the estate, but most probably the upper shelf was for glassware and the lower area for bottles of spirits and liquers. The top of the piece defined by the crown molding is suitable for decorative accessories, as well!
