About the Item

French Provincial Painted Oak Buffet, France, 19th Century Folk ornament and gentle patina — a poetic fragment of rural French life. This charming painted oak buffet captures the spirit of French provincial craftsmanship, where everyday furniture was given a touch of lyricism. The façade is organized around two broad paneled doors, each cut with distinctive arched profiles that recall the silhouettes of village church portals. Above, a single shallow drawer spans the width, punctuated at the center by a carved sunburst medallion — a small yet confident decorative flourish. The apron is where the piece becomes truly narrative: a scalloped skirt, hand-carved with a naïve floral motif, runs in a continuous rhythm across the front and down the legs. Its scroll feet and softened edges speak of generations of use, creating a gentle sway in the line that feels more hand-drawn than machined. The current light, chalky finish reveals traces of earlier paint layers and wear, lending the oak a dry, stone-like presence that suits contemporary interiors as much as rustic ones. This buffet embodies the ease and understatement of the French countryside — practical storage elevated by small, expressive gestures of carving and line. The interior offers generous space for linens, serving pieces or everyday tableware, while the top provides an ideal surface for ceramics, lamps or a seasonal still life. Structurally sound with honest wear consistent with age, the cabinet retains its original character without sacrificing function. Available for private acquisition. 18th Century Louis XV Bleached Oak Buffet/Enfilade
Located in Carmine, TX
This is a beautiful, well-built and large period buffet that has style, and elegance. This gorgeous piece was built in the mid 1700s using all pegged construction and solid oak. The buffet features 3 drawers over three doors, all decorated with beautiful carving and raised panels throughout. The drawers show beautiful hand-made dovetailed joints and the back itself is a work of art. The buffet is still sitting on its original carved feet and shows a scalloped and carved apron, and is finished with simple, original hardware. This piece was hand-selected because of its beautiful proportions, carvings and overall color. The bleaching process shows much of the natural grain of the wood but it also highlights the human-made carvings, creating a beautiful combination of natural and human designs...
