About the Item
19th century Japanese Edo period togidashi (polished out) lacquered tansu chest. Handpainted with detailed hawk feathers in lacquer, no two feathers are a repeat. The piece contains a handwritten letter with "The History of the Lacquer Cabinet, dated February 13th, 1883.
The letter states that the piece was commissioned by the 11th shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
The two doors open to reveal six wooden drawer, which sit above a single large drawer with two pulls. The interiors of the doors are decorated with scenes of graceful cranes.
Provenance: Possible owned by noted antiquarian Ninagawa Noritane (the handwrritten letter notes the story of the cabinet was told by her)

- Condition:Repaired: Minor touch up was done when the cabinet was purchased, with some small chips repaired. Wear consistent with age and use. The doors and drawers are in good working order. The piece will be sold with the documentation about the tansu. There are some cracks to the lacquer on the inside of the drawers. The piece is in very good antique c25000.
