About the Item
An Ormolu-Mounted Amboyna and Lacquer Bonheur-du-Jour
by Henry Dasson
Constructed from mahogany with amboyna burl and mounted with finely cast and hand-chased gilt bronze, surmounted by a Brocatelle d'Espagne marble top, the bonheur-du-jour standing on four fluted and tapering legs inlaid with gilt brass filets, accented with ormolu capitals, unified by an X-shaped stretcher and terminating in tapered, fluted feet; the superstructure concealing two doors inlaid with exotic Meiji period Japanese lacquer panels, adorned with hiramaki-e and takamaki-e techniques depicting a Taoist sage amidst young musicians on an aventurine ground, flanked by carved fretwork pierced panels. The frieze incorporating a concealed drawer, operated by a push button, and revealing a gilt-tooled leather writing surface. Signed on the bronze 'Henry Dasson 1878.'
French, 1878
This piece is a testament to Henry Dasson's fascination with 18th-century French decorative arts, notably inspired by Weisweiler's models commissioned by the famed marchand-mercier Daguerre. The model was made throughout the 1870s by Dasson and is illustrated in several books on the subject.
