About the Item

This is an exceptional folk art bridal cabinet from southern Germany (Upper Bavaria). A special feature of this example is the faux marble painting, which covers the entire cabinet in shades of blue and red. This must have been an incredibly painstaking task at the time. This example dates from around 1850 and is still in very good condition considering its age. Some minor signs of wear are noticeable, particularly on the footboard. Two small pieces of plinth are also missing here, but these are relatively out of sight (see photo). For the purist, it requires a minor restoration, but the cabinet is no less beautiful without it. The interior consists of a rod, a few shelves, and a drawer. The cabinet is relatively shallow and narrow, making it easy to place. In the past, it was customary to give bridal furniture like this to the couple at a wedding. These pieces were later placed in a state room on the farm, which was rarely used for distinguished guests or special occasions. A beautiful and decorative piece of history indeed. On the back is another transport label from 1916 from Miesbach to Bad Tölz.
