Korean Style Tansu Chest with Iron Mounts, c. 1965–1985 — From the Collection of Plácido Domingo A striking and functional Korean-style tansu cabinet, crafted in the mid-to-late 20th century and composed of richly finished hardwoods with traditional cast metal mounts and hardware. This tall, multi-compartment chest features two paneled double-door cabinets surrounded by a total of twenty-one drawers of varying sizes, each fitted with bronze-toned bail pulls. Distinctive iron corner mounts and apron brackets lend the piece a handcrafted yet architectural quality. The cabinet’s form draws inspiration from classic Joseon dynasty bandaji and nong chests but reflects the clean lines and construction precision associated with postwar decorative arts production. The warm amber lacquered finish, sculpted base, and machine-cut joinery suggest manufacture between 1965 and 1985, likely for the export market by a Korean or Japanese workshop catering to Western interiors. Ideal as a statement piece or functional storage in a bedroom, entryway, or study, the cabinet reflects a global design sensibility grounded in traditional Asian craftsmanship. This chest was part of his personal furnishings and reflects the cosmopolitan, cultivated style found in his residences.
