About the Item

Aesthetic Movement Cabinet Designed by T. E. Collcutt and Made by Collinson Lock, London Collcutt designed a number of these cabinets for Collinson Lock. The first example of this cabinet is in the V&A Collection, accession no. MISC.127:1-9-1921. This was shown at the London International Exhibition of 1871 and purchased by the Commissioners of the 1851 Exhibition, who later presented it to the Museum. Other examples were exhibited at the International Exhibition in Vienna in 1873, and the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876. The hand-painted panels of birds and flowers are painted by Charles Fairfax Murray. The famous art historian and collector Charles Handley-Read considered the T. E. Collcutt-designed cabinet, first displayed in 1871, as "one of the most influential pieces of furniture ever designed by a Victorian architect."
