About the Item

After Gerrit Rietveld "Elling" storage cabinet circa 1960s In 1919 Gerrit Rietveld designed the first Elling cabinet. The original example, executed in oak, was acquired by architect Piet Elling and later destroyed in a fire. In 1951, cabinetmaker G.A. van de Groenekan rebuilt the Elling cabinet under Rietveld's supervision for an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The cabinet features four drawers and two doors concealing one shelf. There are approximately 18 known G.A. van de Groenekan built examples recognized by the Rietveld foundation. This example came from a reputable family in Utrecht and has remained in the same family for many years but it can not be recognized by the foundation due to lack of provenance. This is vintage example is as close to the original example on exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum that we have ever seen. The owner claims that Groenkan made a few examples off the books and this is one of them. We wish we had the paperwork to prove it. The cabinet is in exceptional vintage condition with some minor chips and paint loss to edges, watermarks and general signs of use.
