About the Item
An outstanding antique American Empire Revival and Arts
Crafts triple narrow bookcase cabinet, circa 1900. Expertly crafted in richly figured quarter-sawn oak, the cabinet showcases the bold medullary rays and luminous grain that distinguish the finest examples of this era. Three tall glass-front doors open to adjustable interior shelving (three shown 9 included) , offering generous storage and display for books, porcelain, or decorative objects.
The design harmoniously blends Arts
Crafts restraint with American Empire Revival ornament. The clean lines of the case are contrasted by a finely carved dentil molding along the cornice and bold paw feet that ground the form with sculptural presence. Paneled sides and a beadboard back emphasize its handcrafted quality, while the scale and proportions create a commanding yet versatile presence.
In the manner of R. J. Horner of New York, Berkey
Gay, or related New York and Grand Rapids cabinetmakers working around 1900, this bookcase embodies both refined decoration and robust construction. It remains in very good antique condition, retaining its warm original finish with only minor wear consistent with age. A distinguished and versatile piece, it makes an elegant statement in a library, dining room, or great room, and stands as a testament to American craftsmanship at the turn of the twentieth century.
