Antique 17th Century Dutch Black Oak Four Door Renaissance Cabinet

About the Item

An elaborate and rare Renaissance four-door cabinet that is typical for the second half of the 17th century. It is heavily decorated with Renaissance ornaments and symbols. This cabinet is made in the southern part of the Netherlands, circa 1670. This cupboard tells the story of a life course and was given as a wedding present. It is of the best quality oak and was made by a highly-skilled craftsman. The cupboard is very dark brown of color, almost black. The dark color contrasts very will with the exuberant decorations. This cabinet is of very high quality and age, a truly stunning piece. It features four paneled doors with each a different part of the story. Together they depict the life's journey of a couple. The first door on the upper left side features a central woman holding a single rose. In the background, a man is courting a woman. A rose, in general, is a symbol of love, joy, happiness, and affection. The heart-shaped petals and petals under the rose (sub-Rosa) all have a meaning in the direction of love and trust. The upper right door features a central woman holding a bridal veil. On her left side sits a dog, a symbol for trust. On the right side, the man is taking the woman's hand. The story continues on the lower left door panel. The central woman figure holds a basket of flowers that symbolizes fertility and prosperity. The couple shares a drink. The lower right panel shows the woman holding a fan. The handheld fan is as the symbol of wealth or royalty, in western culture, fans were commonly associated with the sophistication of the upper classes. In the lower-left corner, a child is depicted while the couple takes a stroll on the right. Condition details: The cabinet is in very good antique condition. The cabinet has been restored in our atelier. The cabinet has been gently cleaned. Gaps in the back cladding have been closed. The cabinet breaks down in four pieces as is usual for these pieces. We can see only a few (older) restorations and the overall construction is very good and solid. This makes the piece highly authentic. We’ve applied a protective wax coat. The cabinet is now in a very good condition.
