About the Item
This fantastic two-piece 17th-century oak cupboard was made in Antwerp, Flanders, circa 1680. It consists of two pieces, a lower and an upper cabinet. The lower cabinet can be used without the upper cabinet and is finished accordingly. The cabinet was composed by using the finest quality watered European summer oak with tight grain. It was made by a master of the furniture makers guild and countless hours went into building this monumental piece.
The lower cabinet has two doors paneled doors with geometrical moldings. They are flanked by tapered columns with classical leaf carving. Above the doors are two drawers with raised and carved panels flanked by carved lion heads. The right drawer has a green felt liner made for storing silver cutlery. The upper cabinet has two smaller paneled doors with geometrical molds and is also flanked by tapered columns.
This is a stunning piece of furniture that was produced in the late 17th century in the south of the Netherlands during the Renaissance. This prosperous period in Dutch history is also known as the “golden age”. Typical elements and carvings of this piece of furniture are to be found in the Antwerp city hall.
The Dutch golden age The 17th century was an important century for the Netherlands. The region separated from the Spanish Empire and formed its republic. Dutch merchants established their first colonies in the Americas and opened up trade networks around the world. The Dutch economy flourished as much of Europe's trade began passing through Amsterdam. This money helped foster the arts, leading to the rise of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Rubens. This was the Dutch Golden Age. The strong Dutch economy and celebration of the arts provided financial and cultural security to inspire middle and upper-class citizens to buy lots of furniture. This was a big change from the sparsely furnished homes of medieval times. Dutch patrons demanded high-quality, comfortable, and stylish products, and furniture makers obliged. Dutch furniture of the 17th century was lighter, more comfortable, and more versatile than in many other parts of the world. A key form of Dutch furniture in the 17th century was the cabinet, a taller furniture item that had replaced ground-level medieval chests. Cabinets were essential furniture items in most Dutch homes, as well as in the Dutch colonies. Since cabinets were generally used to hold valuable items like linens or silverware, they were works of art themselves, and we see some of the most important styles of Dutch furniture applied here.
This piece has a stunning honey color with a soft shine and great patina as a result of many years of waxing and polishing. The cupboard is in great authentic condition. Because of its origin, it has always been a showcase piece of furniture instead of a functional piece. It has been carefully and gently cleaned in our workshop and is now ready for use.
The top cabinet has a height of 22.8 inches. The total height of the cabinet is 68.9 inches. The drawers have a height of 4.9 inches and the total width of the furniture is 61.4 inches.
