About the Item
An antique Chinese wedding cabinet from the early 20th century with black lacquer and large brass medallion hardware. Created in China during the early years of the 20th century, this wedding cabinet features a black lacquered ground perfectly complimenting its linear silhouette. A simply molded cornice sits above two doors fitted with an oversized brass medallion and etched backplates with ornate pulls below, opening to reveal inner shelves and two hidden drawers offering convenient storage opportunities. The doors are secured thanks to semi-circular gadrooned parts in their corners. The cabinet is raised on four straight legs connected to one another through a carved apron in the front. The sides showcase panels with slightly raised accents while the back is simply planked. Chinese Wedding cabinets often housed wedding gifts or the dowry of a new bride. They were traditionally given as a gift by their parents for the couple moving into their new home. Most original wedding cabinets have a single shelf and two drawers. With its clean, pure lines and black lacquer, this Chinese wedding cabinet from the early 20th century will make for a great addition to any home, perhaps used as a media cabinet in a bedroom or living room.
